Training update: ECITB announced two short e-learning modules on 8 October, covering the use of PPE and the organisational decisions behind its provision. The modules address fit, compatibility, checks and reporting concerns.

Access and purpose have limits

Each Toolbox Talk takes around ten minutes. ECITB says the training is initially available to its in-scope employers, rather than automatically open to every UK business. The courses raise awareness; they are not intended to establish technical PPE competence.

Managers should check access and suitability with ECITB. Completion is not a replacement for the project's risk assessment, equipment instructions, task-specific training or any specialist assessment required for the protection selected.

Mobilisation commentary: check the person and the task

Issuing a standard pack does not by itself confirm that each item fits the individual or works with the other equipment they need. For an installation team, arrange time before mobilisation to confirm the required sizes and identify concerns. Provide a named route for resolving an unsuitable item before the worker is expected to use it.

Look at the planned activities rather than choosing equipment from the trade name alone. Handling sheet metal, using access equipment and working in a noisy area may involve different requirements. The competent people responsible for the task should make those selections using the actual hazards and manufacturer's information.

A useful pre-start conversation

  1. Confirm the site requirements.Check what the principal contractor requires and where task-specific assessment adds to it.
  2. Check the available range.Resolve sizing and compatibility questions before the team arrives at the workface.
  3. Explain reporting and replacement.Identify who can supply an alternative and what to do when equipment is damaged or unsuitable.
  4. Review when conditions change.Revisit the selection when the task, working environment or worker's requirements change.

Include provision responsibilities in the package

For a ductwork installation package, state who supplies standard and specialist equipment and how replacement items are obtained. Keep the provision plan consistent with the method statement and site induction.

The ventilation RAMS guide helps connect the work sequence with the actual conditions. The immediate value of this update is a better pre-start check, not an assumption that a short online course removes the need for practical supervision.
